If you have shopped for lace front wigs, you have seen “13×4” and “13×6” everywhere. The numbers look technical, but the idea is simple, and choosing the right one can save you money or give you the styling freedom you actually want. This guide explains what the measurements mean, how they change the way a wig looks and wears, and which one makes sense for different styles.
What do 13×4 and 13×6 mean?
The numbers describe the size of the lace panel at the front of the wig, in inches:
- 13 inches is the width, measured across the front of the head from roughly ear to ear.
- 4 or 6 inches is the depth, measured from the hairline back toward the crown.
So both frontals cover the full hairline, but a 13×6 extends about two inches further back. Behind the lace, the rest of the cap is made of wefts (machine-sewn tracks of hair), which you cannot part through naturally.
How the extra two inches change things
Parting space
The lace area is where you can part the hair and see a scalp-like base. A 13×4 gives you about four inches of parting depth, which is enough for a middle part or a moderate side part. A 13×6 lets you create a deeper side part or a longer middle part that reaches further toward the crown.
Versatility
With 13×6 lace, you have more options for high ponytails, half-up styles and slicked-back looks, because more of the front section has a natural-looking base. For a full high ponytail or bun with lace all the way around, a 360 lace wig is the more complete option.
Price
Lace is hand-tied, so more lace means more labor. At the same length and density, a 13×6 typically costs more than a 13×4.
Weight and comfort
Lace is lighter and more breathable than wefts, so a larger lace area can feel slightly airier. The difference is modest; length and density affect weight much more.
Install and maintenance
More lace means more lace to cut, tint and lay. It also means a larger delicate area to protect when detangling. Many modern 13×6 wigs come pre-cut and pre-plucked, which reduces the learning curve.
13×4 vs 13×6 comparison
| Feature | 13×4 frontal | 13×6 frontal |
|---|---|---|
| Lace depth | About 4 inches | About 6 inches |
| Parting | Middle and moderate side parts | Deep side parts, longer middle part |
| Updos | Limited | Better (360 is best for full updos) |
| Price | Lower | Higher |
| Lace to manage | Less | More |
| Best for | Everyday styles, value | Versatile styling, dramatic parts |
Where closures and 360 wigs fit
- 4×4, 5×5 and 6×4.5 closures cover only a patch at the top front of the head, not the full hairline. Cheaper and simpler, but limited parting and you cannot pull the hair back.
- 7×5 lace, used on many “pull and go” wigs, sits between a closure and a frontal.
- 360 lace runs all around the perimeter, so you can pull hair up in every direction.
Which should you choose?
- Choose 13×4 if you mostly wear your hair down with a middle or slight side part, you want to save money, or you are newer to lace.
- Choose 13×6 if you love deep side parts, frequently switch parting, or want more freedom for half-up and pulled-back styles.
- Choose 360 if high ponytails and buns are your go-to.

Tips for wearing a frontal well
- Measure your head before you choose a cap size.
- Try your part on the lace before trimming anything, so you know where it naturally falls.
- Do not part beyond the lace; the wefts behind it will show.
- Tint the lace if it looks lighter than your skin.
- Read our glueless install guide for a step-by-step method.
What sits behind the lace matters too
Lace size gets the attention, but the rest of the cap affects comfort and fit. Look for an adjustable band, drawstring or strap, combs at the front, sides and back, and a stated cap size range. Some listings describe a “dome” or “3D” cap shape designed to follow the curve of the head, which can help the wig sit flatter at the crown. If you have a smaller or larger head than average, check whether the retailer offers a small or large cap, or whether the adjustable band covers your measurement.
Questions to ask before you buy
- Do I actually wear deep side parts or pulled-back styles, or mostly a middle part?
- Is the lace pre-cut, and are the knots bleached?
- What density and length am I choosing, and how does that change the price between 13×4 and 13×6?
- Is the lace HD or transparent, and is that difference worth the cost for me? See our lace comparison.
- What is the return policy if the lace has been cut?
FAQ
Is 13×6 better than 13×4?
Not better, just more versatile. If you never use deep parts or pulled-back styles, a 13×4 gives you most of the benefit for less money.
Can I wear a ponytail with a 13×4 wig?
A low ponytail with the front hairline visible is often possible. High ponytails expose the wefts at the back, so a 360 wig is better for those.
Is a 13×6 wig heavier?
Not noticeably. Weight depends mostly on length and density.
Can I glue a 13×6 frontal?
Yes, frontals can be glued or worn with lace tape. Many 13×6 wigs are also built to be worn glueless with a drawstring and combs.
